Seminar: Revisiting A Thousand and One Nights

This seminar, organised in collaboration with the Sheikh Zayedl Book Award, will be held on Monday 10 June at Casa Árabe's headquarters in Madrid. An open day to shed light on some aspects of this formidable work. Register now to attend. The Thousand and One Nights is a masterpiece of world storytelling, whose complexity and variety of stories have made it a true literary treasure. Its interweaving of tales of adventure, romance, magic and morality has placed it in a prominent place in the history of literature, offering a source of fascination and inspiration, capturing the imagination of readers of all ages and cultures throughout the centuries. The universe of Alf Layla wa Layla is so vast that it invites many different readings. With this in mind, Casa Árabe and the Sheikh Zayed Book Award have organized this open day to shed light on some unknown aspects of this formidable work. 18:00 Welcome Irene Lozano, Director-General, Casa Árabe H.E. Many critics and readers argue then that the tales from The Arabian Nights degrade women as they are considered to be nothing more than objects of pleasure or causing the downfall of men. But Shahrazad’s fierce individuality, singular cleverness, and apparent charisma transform her into a champion for women, who transgresses without effectively altering the attitudes of her society. She stands as an epitome of a modern woman feminist, her influence encompassing generations after generations. Salvador Peña, Multimodal Shahrazad: A Thousand and One Nights and its re-enactments (20 min) Throughout the centuries the Thousand and One Nights have passed time and again from its original form of a well-known book to adaptations in different means of expression. We propose a brief overview of some of the most important ones in literature, music, cinema, theater and painting, trying to answer the question: have these adaptations been faithful to the original message of the work? 19:00 Hanoos Hanoos, The Brushes of The Arabian Nights (10 min) The painter, of Iraqi origin and living in Spain, will talk about how he has captured, in his recent exhibition 'Shahrazad and the Arabian Nights', the stories and characters immersed in his daily life through the use of shapes, composition or nuances. His creative process emphasizes the importance of color, with the ability to highlight or hide part of the story. His sources of inspiration represent the heritage of European art, where East and West coexist in the foreground. Paulo Lemos Horta, Shahrazad and Hanna Diyab: storytellers of A Thousand and One Nights The talk will focus, on the one hand, on Shahrazad as the narrator of the tales rather than as the Sultan's love interest, and on the other, on Hanna Diyab, the Syrian who passed on the most famous tales such as "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp", "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" and "Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Pari Banu", added to Antoine Galland's collection of tales in French in the early 18th century. The emphasis on these two storytellers in a new light suggests different ways of approaching The Thousand and One Nights and reveals new information. Further information: https://en.casaarabe.es/eventos-arabes/show/revisiting-a-thousand-and-one-nights Desirée López Bernal, The tales of Ali Baba and Aladdin and their traces in the European folklore tradition (20 min) The last volumes of the French translation-adaptation of The Arabian Nights published by Antoine Galland contain two of the tales that were most successful with the European public: Aladdin and Ali Baba. Introduced in Europe from Galland's text, they were soon widely disseminated, becoming established in the oral traditions of almost the entire continent, to the point of being today a typical tale of international folklore. In this talk we will explore in detail how and when both tales were included by Galland in his Mille et une nuits and we will learn about the impact that both stories had on the European folklore tradition, with special attention to Spain. 19:50 Debate with the public

Recital poético "Podría no haber sido" basado en la obra "Poemas de la sombra"

Casa Árabe y el Círculo Intercultural Hispano Árabe organizaron un recital de poesía a cargo Mohamed Alfaqeeh Saleh. El recital contó con la participación del poeta Mohamed Alfaqeeh Saleh, autor de la obra, las lecturas en español corrieron a cargo de las poetas Asunción Caballero Muñoz-Reja y Pilar García Orgaz. Presenta: Abdulhadi Sadoun, escritor, hispanista y editor.

Presentación del libro "Noches de seda" de Aicha Bassry

Con Motivo del Día Internacional de la Mujer, Casa Árabe y la editorial Verbum en colaboración con el Círculo Intercultural Hispano Árabe, presentaron el libro: Noches de Seda de Aicha Bassry. Este acto contó con la participación de Aicha Bassry, escritora, Paula Izquierdo, escritora; Abdul Hadi Sadoun, escritor, traductor y editor colaborador de la editorial Verbum. Discontinuidades árabes. Discursos e imaginarios en un contexto de cambio

Casa Árabe acogió, el 16 de febrero en Madrid, la presentación de esta obra sobre discursos e imaginarios en el contexto actual de cambios en la región. El acto contó con la participación de Elena Arigita y Juan A. Macías Amoretti, editores del libro y profesores de la Universidad de Granada. Presentación del Método "A jugar...!!!"

Casa Árabe presentó, el 4 de febrero de 2016 en su sede de Madrid, este método lúdico-fonético de lecto-escritura para aprender árabe concebido para niños con déficit auditivo, alumnos de Infantil y Primaria. El acto, introducido por Pedro Villena, director general de Casa Árabe, contó con las intervenciones de Federico Palomera, secretario general de la Comisión Nacional de Cooperación con la Unesco; María Rodríguez-Varo Fuentes, responsable de Acción Social de la Fundación Cajasol; José Roberto Gómez Castro, responsable del equipo de orientación educativa especializado en discapacidad auditiva de la Junta de Andalucía; Mª del Rosario García Molina, autora del método y presidenta del Centro Unesco de Sevilla; y Leocadio Marín Rodríguez, profesor de sordos. El Método Lúdico-Fonético de Lecto-Escritura “A Jugar…!!!” en lengua española y árabe, se produjo hace más de 20 años y sigue estando vigente como uno de los mejores materiales didácticos pensado en principio para niños con déficit auditivo, pero también muy adecuado y conveniente para niños de Educación Infantil y primeros cursos de Primaria. Se trata de un método basado en el juego, que cobra especial importancia por su papel integrador. Todos los niños del aula, tanto oyentes como aquellos que presentan problemas de audición y lenguaje, aprenden el lenguaje de signos a la par que a leer y escribir. Al contar este DVD con una versión en árabe, está dirigido tanto a los niños y jóvenes de habla árabe que se encuentran en España como a los que se encuentran en sus países de origen. Además, puede contribuir al aprendizaje de la lengua castellana. El DVD ya se ha empezado a distribuir de forma gratuita en Marruecos tanto a la red de colegios marroquíes como a las ONG relacionadas con discapacidades auditivas. Presentación del libro "Madrid islámico"

El arabista Daniel Gil-Benumeya presentó, el 2 de febrero de 2016 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid, esta obra dedicada a los orígenes y legado islámico de la ciudad. Gil Benumeya estuvo acompañado por Ana Varela Mateos, coordinadora general de Cultura, Deporte y Turismo del Ayuntamiento de Madrid. Presentó el acto Pedro Villena, director general de Casa Árabe. Madrid es la única capital europea de origen islámico, si bien esta afirmación ha sido objeto de una larga controversia que continúa hasta hoy y que expresa hasta qué punto la herencia de al-Ándalus sigue sin estar completamente asumida en el imaginario nacional español. Durante 250 años, la madina de Madrid formó parte del sistema defensivo de la frontera norte de al-Ándalus, hasta su conquista e incorporación al reino de Castilla a finales del siglo XI. No obstante, la presencia musulmana en Madrid se mantuvo durante los quinientos años siguientes, a través de la minoría mudéjar y luego morisca. La definitiva desaparición del islam madrileño, bien entrada la Edad Moderna, coincidió con los esfuerzos por inventarle a Madrid un pasado más acorde con el recién adquirido estatus de capital del imperio católico por excelencia, lo que aceleró la destrucción de la herencia material y simbólica de su pasado andalusí e inauguró una relación conflictiva con la memoria que se mantiene hasta nuestros días. El legado islámico de Madrid que podemos disfrutar hoy es modesto y aún plantea muchos interrogantes, pero ofrece suficientes datos como para aventurarse a conocer los paisajes de aquella «ciudad pequeña y próspera» que describió el geógrafo medieval al-Idrisi hace casi un milenio, así como para reflexionar sobre la gestión de la memoria histórica.
